DSCN0438Japanese Hirado porcelain novelty netsuke of a seated puppy, Meiji period

For sale this fine rare Japanese Hirado porcelain novelty netsuke of a seated puppy, dating to the Meiji period. It is in an unusual seated begging stance with the front two paws that move up and down as though asking for food. The netsuke is 5.5cm tall and 4cm long. It is in good condition with a small glaze chip to the right-hand side of the front paws opening and a further couple of small chips or flakes to the underside of the same opening. These are not noticeable with the netsuke is seated. A rare item.  A similar example, without polychrome details, is illustrated in Laura J. Mueller’s catalogue for the Toledo Museum of Art: Adornment in Clay, Ceramic Netsuke from the Richard R. Silverman collection, 2010, p. 49, no. 2009.168
